Many of you are lucky enough to have a farmer’s market available year-round. While some options are available to me locally, it’s still not the same. I am counting the days until Spring when they become fully available again.

For those of you who follow my blog, you know I have commented on organic farming in the past.  One of my more memorable posts in regards to organic food discussed Foodday.org.  I’m not going to launch into anything related to organic farming specifically here, rather, tell you about a great resource for fresh, organic foods.

Doorganics is a locally owned company that is exactly what it sounds like:  a company that brings organic food to your door.  Their mission is to deliver the freshest food possible from local and sustainable farms, right to your doorstep. During Michigan’s prime growing season, the food will come from area farmers.  However, because Michigan’s growing season is limited during the winter (like I said) they also provide a variety of organic produce from warmer climates.

A couple of features I like about their website:

• You can check if they service your area by punching in your zip code.
• It highlights the farms that they work with.
• It actually tells you what you are getting in your bin from week to week and how much it will cost.  No searching around or calling for prices.  As a member of a CSA, I never quite know what’s coming from week to week so I feel like this is a nice feature.
• It posts recipes you can try with your items that get delivered.

So, for those of you who want to eat fresh, organic foods that help local farmers and reduce your carbon footprint, this may be something you want to check out. It might also be worth sharing with busy clients or patients who don’t have (or take) the time to eat as much fresh, organic food as they would like.  I realize not everyone may have the resources to take advantage of Doorganics, but for those of you who do, it might be worth checking out.
