Unfortunately many people, including fitness and wellness professionals, think health and well-being are based on two things: how you eat and whether or not you exercise. While these two factors are very important, the issue of health is much more complex. So much so, that I utilize and recommend a documentary series as a tool to start to look at disease and disease prevention a little bit differently.
UNNATURAL CAUSES is the acclaimed documentary series broadcast by PBS and now used by thousands of organizations around the country to tackle the root causes of our alarming socio-economic and racial inequities in health. The series crisscrosses the nation uncovering startling new findings that suggest there is much more to our health than bad habits, health care, or unlucky genes. The social circumstances in which we are born, live, and work can actually get under our skin and disrupt our physiology as much as germs and viruses.
This series is a must-see for anyone working in the field of health promotion, fitness, and wellness. You can check the Unnatural Causes website for video clips, episode outlines, as well as search for a local organization who owns the series where you might be able to view it or borrow it.
